Day 16 & 17: Harwich (United Kingdom) –> Bedford (United Kingdom)
After a very smooth crossing – we could hardly feel the boat move – we are awoken early at 05:30 by the ships alarm clock.
We decide to skip breakfast as we do not have a long day today, and it is hard to eat so early anyway.
We have an unusual end to this road trip – as we have a personal/family commitment in Bedford today and tomorrow. Normally, we‘re racing across England and Wales to make a ferry to Ireland tonight.
We pop down the many flights of stairs back to our car on deck 3. All the freight has already been unloaded and it is only the cars and camper vans that remain on-board.

Very quickly, we’re leaving the ship and in the queue for UK Border Force.

With the ”border cone” providing important security – we’ve been seeing this cone in place for years now!

It’s a pleasant two-hour drive to today’s destination with almost no traffic this early in the morning. Although driving on the left is “normal” for us, it always takes a little bit of adjustment back after such intense driving on the other side over the past two weeks.

Arriving at our hotel in Bedford at 09:00, where we had already arranged early check-in.

We walk along the parks and rivers of Bedford.

Encountering a random, abandoned pyramid came as a surprise.

Passing the Higgins Art Gallery & Museum converted from an old brewery.

We stumbled upon a crayon 718 with relatively rare ceramic brakes optioned in.

Porsche 718 in Bedford
Our car still parked up after its longest rest of the trip.

And ate dinner in a lovely local Indian restaurant that Cliff Richard once visited and they made sure you know!

Dining at the Blue Monk in Bedford
Finishing up the day with a pint at our hotel and Christmas bookings already being pushed.

Stats
No refuelling required today.
Today we did 192 km over 2:27 hours, with an average speed of 78 km/h, consuming 8.8 litres/100 km.
